- What the evidence shows
- No published source supports a six-in-100 rate. NCRB records a registered rape crime rate of about 4.3 per lakh women — though registered cases and true prevalence are not the same measure.
Our finding
Why we rated this “False”
The figure has no identified source
Six out of every 100 women means a rate of 6%. For a claim of that magnitude, the first question is where it comes from, and there is no published dataset that produces it.
It does not appear in National Crime Records Bureau reporting, in the National Family Health Survey, or in any national survey of comparable standing. Absent a stated source, it cannot be checked — and a figure of this seriousness should not be circulated without one.
What the crime statistics record
The NCRB's Crime in India 2024 report, released in May 2026, recorded 29,536 registered rape cases across the country, the large majority involving adult victims.
Expressed as a rate, that is approximately 4.3 cases per lakh women. [1]
The distance between the two numbers is not marginal. Six per 100 is 6,000 per lakh. The registered rate is 4.3 per lakh — a difference of roughly three orders of magnitude.
The important qualification
Here the analysis has to be careful, because the two figures are not measuring the same thing, and it would be misleading to present the NCRB rate as though it settles the question of prevalence.
NCRB counts registered cases. A case enters the data when it is reported to police and recorded. Rape is among the most severely under-reported crimes anywhere, and India is no exception. Survivors do not report for reasons that are well documented: fear of retaliation, family and social pressure, mistrust of the process, and the knowledge that most cases involve someone known to the victim.
Prevalence surveys measure something different — they ask women directly, in confidence, and consistently find rates of sexual violence far above what registered-crime data shows.
So the true prevalence of sexual violence in India is certainly higher than 4.3 per lakh. The analysis published alongside the 2024 statistics makes exactly this point about what crime data misses. [1]
What none of that does is supply a source for six in 100. A claim can be unsupported by the evidence while the underlying problem is still worse than the official numbers suggest. Both are true here.
Where the claim goes wrong
The specific statistic is unsourced and is not produced by any national dataset. Stating it as established fact, at a figure vastly above anything published, does not strengthen the case against sexual violence in India — it makes that case easier to dismiss.
The accurate position is harder to state and more useful: registered cases run at about 4.3 per lakh women, actual prevalence is substantially higher than that, and the gap between the two is itself one of the most serious findings in the field.
In short
There is no published basis for a six-in-100 rate. NCRB records roughly 4.3 registered rape cases per lakh women for 2024. True prevalence is higher than the registered figure — but the distance to 6% is not bridged by under-reporting, and no source has been offered for it.
